In the first 5 months of 2021, a significant increase in the number of road accidents has, unfortunately, not gone by unnoticed. According to official data published by INSTAT, in May 2021, a total of 120 road accidents were recorded, compared to 75 accidents taking place back in 2021 – marking a 60% rise.
As a result, the study of the last 5 months also shows a 40.3% rise compared to last year, where a total of 547 road accidents have been reported compared to the 390 accidents happening in the first five months of 2020.
During May 2021, the number of citizens losing their lives due to road accidents has been a staggering 20 people, compared to 9, back in 2020. In addition, in during the first 5 months of 2021, a total of 90 fatalities were recorded, compared to 58, during the same period last year.
According to INSTAT, in May 2021, in 84.2% of cases, road accidents happened as a result of the drivers’ behavior.
The high increase in the number of road accidents during this period compared to the previous year is also thought to be a consequence of the restrictive measures put in force during March-May of 2020.
