The Serbian police have arrested a person suspected of committing “war crimes” in 1999 in Kosovo, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, said on Wednesday.
In a press release, the Serbian Ministry did not indicate the nationality of the arrested person, but identified him with the initials F.K., 56 years old.
He is suspected of having committed “war crimes against members of the Yugoslav army in Koshare in May 1999”, according to Dacic.
“The police officers of the War Crimes Detection Service have arrested, and after the criminal report for the criminal offense of war crimes against prisoners, have detained the suspect F. K. (1968) for interview and further proceedings at the Prosecutor’s Office for War Crimes” notification.
It is not clear when he was arrested.
The Battle of Koshare took place in the municipality of Gjakova during the last war in Kosovo in 1999, between the Kosovo Liberation Army and the army of Serbia.
The battle lasted several weeks in the spring of that year, leaving dozens of fighters dead on both sides.
Meanwhile, the Serbian authorities have recently arrested four Kosovar citizens, accusing them of war crimes.
The Kosovar authorities have described as arbitrary and unjust the arrest of Kosovar citizens in Serbia on charges of war crimes. They have requested the help of the international factor for their release.
The Minister of Justice of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has requested through a letter last week to her Serbian counterpart the transfer of citizens of Kosovo, who are being held in Serbia.
But, on Wednesday, she said that it is unlikely that Serbia will respond to the request of the Kosovar authorities for the extradition of Kosovar citizens, due to ongoing legal non-cooperation.
