Socialist MPs gathered on Thursday morning for a parliamentary group meeting, shortly before the start of the session where SPAK’s request to lift Belinda Balluku’s immunity will be reviewed.

Deputies Elisa Spiropali and Fatmir Xhafaj were not present at the meeting, while Belinda Balluku was also absent.

Prime Minister Edi Rama was present at the meeting. According to sources of journalist Eksiola Shehu for Euronews Albania, the instruction from the head of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group to the MPs was not to provoke.

During the session, two reports prepared by the majority and the opposition regarding the request of the Special Prosecution (SPAK) will be reviewed. The request has been in Parliament since December 16 of last year. The political sides hold opposing positions on this issue.

The Socialists argue that Balluku, who no longer holds executive functions in the government, does not pose a risk of destroying evidence or fleeing, and that the investigations by SPAK can continue without the need for a detention measure in prison. To reject SPAK’s request, the majority needs 71 votes in Parliament.
