During her official visit to The Hague, Albania’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Elisa Spiropali, held a meeting with the former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, who is currently being held in pre-trial detention at the Special Court.
In a statement on social media, Spiropali said she conveyed to Thaçi the full support of the Albanian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasizing the importance of a fair judicial process for the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA).
“I met President Thaçi in the detention center of the Special Court and, through him, conveyed the greetings of the Albanian government and our people to Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi as well. I am pleased that Thaçi is in good health and closely following developments in Kosovo and Albania. I expressed our support for a regular and fair process that brings historical justice, not historical injustice,” Spiropali wrote.
She stressed that the decision of the Special Court must be based on facts and respect for legal rights, underlining that “the KLA’s war was a struggle for freedom and the protection of human life, not an act of aggression against anyone.” According to her, this historical truth cannot be tarnished.
During her stay in The Hague, Minister Spiropali also met with the Dutch Foreign Minister, David van Weel. The two ministers signed a joint declaration aimed at deepening cooperation and strengthening the European partnership between the two countries.
Spiropali praised the Netherlands’ merit-based approach to European Union enlargement, describing it as consistent with the support that the friendly country provides to Albania in its EU integration process.
