In 5 years, the Albanian population shrank by 50 000 inhabitants. Recent data gathered by INSTAT discovered that our population is declining with each year.

The rapport of deaths to births shows that in 2021, our population should have increased with around 33 000 citizens, but the negative balance comes as a result of the high rate of emigration in our country.

However, compared to 2019, our country has also reported 486 less births. Birth rate has dropped amongst the age groups from 20-25 and 25-29, whereas amongst the older age groups, there has been a slight rise.

In the study of the past 5 years, 2020 seems to be the year with the highest fatality rate, with around 6 000 deaths. Men represented the highest percentage of the total fatalities.

The main causes of death amongst men and women continue to be the “disorders in the blood circulatory system”.

The two other prominent causes are “unspecified symptoms and diseases” and “tumors”, the latter being the cause of death in 11.1% of women and 14.5% of men.

In 2020, the average lifespan was estimated to be 75.2 years for men and 79.6 for women. This means that women live around 4.4 years more than men, in Albania.
