Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev was denied entry in North Macedonia, alongside three persons accompanying him.

North Macedonian police argued that the individuals who were travelling to attend the memorial service at the Bulgarian military cemetery, did not meet entry requirements.

Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry expressed their disappointment in the decision.

“Bulgaria will officially raise this concern with North Macedonia as well as international partners,” the Foreign Ministry declared.

Kovatchev, from the GERB party of former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, also said he had informed President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi on the matter. The latter took to Twitter to share his reaction.

“We condemn the denial of entry of MEP Andrey Kovatchev to North Macedonia on the 6th May. We call on the government of North Macedonia to urgently clarify the situation. The denial of entry of a Member of the European Parliament is a very serious decision,” wrote Várhelyi.
