Prime Minister Edi Rama has reacted to the testimony of former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Rubin in The Hague, who among other things criticized the Special Court for keeping former KLA leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi in detention for five years.
In a post on his Facebook page, Rama wrote that the ongoing process in The Hague is paralyzing and has badly tarnished international justice.
“Freedom has a name. From the testimony of former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Rubin in The Hague, where a paralyzing process has badly stained international justice…” Rama wrote.
The testimony of former senior American diplomat James Rubin, the first defense witness for former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, concluded today at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague and will continue tomorrow for the third consecutive day.
Rubin also testified about a phone call between Hashim Thaçi and then-U.S. President Bill Clinton in June 1999, during which Thaçi pledged to respect minorities despite his people having suffered mistreatment for years.
“I heard from Sandy Berger, President Clinton’s national security adviser—since I did not speak directly with the president. He told President Clinton that, despite the violence they had endured, they would not retaliate,” Rubin said.
“They would not seek revenge while Serbian forces were withdrawing and NATO was taking control of the situation. Of course, there might have been incidents of violence in such circumstances, but President Clinton was very impressed by this, and Berger conveyed it to me,” he added.
