Prime Minister Edi Rama thanked all citizens who voted in the May 14th local elections in Albania, where the Socialist Party scored a sweeping victory.

“Thank you” wrote the prime minister on his Facebook account, after the SP won 53 municipalities, amongst them some of the most important ones, such as Tirana, Kamza, Vora, Elbasan, Tropoja, Korça, Saranda, Dibra, Berat, Vlora, Lezha, Pogradec, Kukës.

The Socialists were able to win even in traditional Democrat strongholds, with Shkodra and Kamza being two of the examples.

Meanwhile, the “Together We Win” coalition led by Ilir Meta and Sali Berisha only managed to win seven municipalities, namely: Kavaja, Puka, Has, Himara, Memaliaj, Mirdita and Fushë Arrëz.

No municipality was won by the Democratic Party, at least in those cities where this political party came out with candidates.

Local elections were held on May 14th in the 61 municipalities of Albania.

The Central Election Commission reported a 37.79% turnout, one of the lowest turnouts registered in any elections so far.

According to international observers, these elections were generally well-administered, competitive, and held with the participation of the key political forces. However, the process was characterized by continued polarization between the main political parties and deep division within the opposition.
