Summer in Europe is a delightful season, but August is one of the busiest months for tourism, which means you’ll have to share the wonders with a lot of people. Fortunately, we have some tips that will take you away from the large crowds to some of the continent’s many magical places.

The Albanian Riviera

Sand, sun, and wonders on the Ionian coast.

Even though it’s no longer the hidden gem it was just twenty years ago, when the beaches were semi-empty and prices incredibly low, the stunning southern coast of Albania remains a delight for those seeking sun, sand, and seafood.

Saranda is a bustling city in every sense, with its promenade lined with bars. If you prefer quieter spots, head up the coast to Himara, bordered by a series of beautiful beaches (try Potam, just south).

In August, sunshine, pleasantly warm water, and non-oppressive temperatures are guaranteed; beach loungers and umbrellas are available in limited numbers, but you can always find tranquil sandy beaches in places like Palasa, Borsh, Bunec, and on the islands off Ksamil.

Heading towards the epic Llogara Pass to the bay of Vlora, you will find several resorts and secluded beaches reachable by boat at the tip of the Karaburun Peninsula. For an afternoon spent differently, visit the archaeological site of Butrint, where Greek, Roman, and Byzantine ruins, some dating back 2500 years, occupy a rugged promontory.

The full list includes:

  1. Albanian Riviera
  2. Pelion Peninsula, Greece
  3. Minho, Portugal
  4. Central Austria
  5. Belgian Coast
  6. Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden
