The minister of Europe and foreign affairs in Albania has confirmed that an Albanian citizen is currently stranded in Afghanistan.
She explained that this information was received a few hours ago because the young woman working for a foreign company in Afghanistan has contacted the Albanian embassy in Ankara asking for help in getting out of the country.
Initially, the Minister of Foreign Affairs told Euronews Albania that there are no more Albanians left in Afghanistan, however, in only a few hours the situation seems to have changed.
The Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani left the country on Sunday after the Taliban took control of the presidential palace in Kabul. The militant group has pledged to restore peace and improve the lives of their citizens.
Meanwhile, the US forces only have control over the international airport of Kabul, where hundreds of Afghans are currently trying to leave the country.
Albania, Kosovo and North Macedonia have come out with statements saying that they are prepared to shelter political emigrants from Afghanistan.
Currently, in Afghanistan, there are around 100 citizens from North Macedonia that are working for private companies.
The Macedonian MFA has announced that in the case that the situation becomes life-threatening, a plan is being drafted regarding their retrieval.
The Kosovo government has also confirmed that there are Kosovar citizens currently in Afghanistan and that they are working on their evacuation but they have given an exact number.
