The former fighter of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Hasan Dakaj, was arrested today by the Serbian police in Merdare.

From the information his arrest took place around 09:00 in the morning, while he was traveling with his brother to Italy.

The news was made public by lawyer Xhevdet Smakiqi through a post on Facebook, who made an urgent call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request Dakaj’s release through diplomatic methods.

Full post of lawyer Xhevdet Smakiqi:

There is no liberalization for KLA members!

Today I am authorized by the Dakaj Family from Prizren to protect the legal rights of their relative Hasan Dakaj, born on 10.08.1980 from Prizren, who only because he has been a member of the KLA, was arrested in Merdare around 09:00 in the morning, while he was traveling with his brother towards Italy.

The Dakaj family is in great fear and anxiety because the Serbian police, according to the first information, sent Hasan Dakaj, former KLA member to the detention center in Kushumli and he may be subjected to physical and mental torture or worse.

I will immediately take action by applying to the Ministry of Justice to inquire about the fate of the citizen of Kosovo, Hasan Dakaj, who was arrested this morning in Merdare by the Serbian police only because he was a former member of the KLA.

As a lawyer for the Dakaj family, I make an urgent appeal to the Ministry of Justice to request through diplomatic channels the release of Hasan Dakaj and allow him to move freely like any citizen of Kosovo without discrimination.

Stop the persecution of the citizens of Kosovo by the state of Serbia, which is violating the fundamental freedom of free movement, focusing on the former members of the KLA.
