Mike Turner, a legislator from the United States, has emphasized the necessity for heightened U.S. involvement in defusing the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia. This engagement aims to prevent the destabilization of yet another region in Europe, all while Russia’s conflict in Ukraine continues to unfold.
These statements came during an interview with Voice of America following Turner’s recent visit to the Western Balkans.
Turner urged the Biden administration to prioritize unresolved issues in the Balkans. He emphasized the need to prevent another region in Europe from destabilizing or plunging into an intractable conflict while Russia’s aggression continues in Ukraine.
During his meeting with Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani, Turner underscored the necessity of establishing the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities as a result of the European dialogue and stressed that it enjoys strong support from the United States. He believes it’s crucial for the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to follow through on this commitment.
As U.S. officials issue warnings about potential consequences for both Pristina and Belgrade if they fail to meet their obligations, Republican legislator Mike Turner advocated for active diplomatic efforts and increased support to facilitate a resolution.
Turner argued that now is the time for President Biden’s administration to ramp up the efforts of the State Department, in addition to the ongoing work by U.S. embassies. He believes there’s room for more diplomatic maneuvering.
In his role as Chair of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in the House of Representatives, Mike Turner emphasized the importance of the Western nations making it clear to Balkan leaders that their credibility is at stake if they don’t honor their commitments. He sees this issue as involving multiple parties, including the EU, the United States, Kosovo, and Serbia.
Regarding Serbia, where Belgrade remains resistant to implementing European sanctions against Russia, Turner believes he conveyed the Western stance clearly during his meeting with President Aleksandar Vučić. He observed that Vučić is navigating a delicate balance in his current position.
Turner also highlighted significant European investments in Serbia and Belgrade’s aspirations toward EU membership, suggesting that Vučić will eventually have to make a decision.
Congress is closely monitoring the Balkans, recognizing the potential for two conflicts to emerge in Europe if certain issues remain unresolved. Turner stressed that these conflicts would stem from a failure to explore diplomatic alternatives and seek peaceful solutions, rather than being inevitable.
