After US Ambassador Yuri Kim met the leader of the Democratic Party, she spoke briefly to the media about the relationship that this party needs to establish with its former leader as well as one of its founders, Sali Berisha.

“The Democratic Party played an indispensable role in leading this country out of communism, from breaking it free from dictatorship. It would be a historic irony, but also a tragedy for this country, not just the party if the party were to eat grass for the sake of one man’s personal interest. There are difficult decisions ahead for all”, said the US Ambassador on Friday.

But does it all depend on Basha and what are the rules of the parliament?

“In the first session, after the new Speaker of the Assembly is appointed, parties are informed that they might form a parliamentary group based on their results at the elections. From that moment, MPs have five days to announce which parliamentary group they prefer to join, or else opt to be independent”, according to the rules of the Assembly.

In the case of DP’s parliamentary group and Sali Berisha, according to the rules, there are two ways. The first is for Berisha, 5 days after the first session, to declare whether he will join the group, or prefer to remain independent. The second scenario is for the DP not to include the name of Berisha when it submits the list containing the members of the group.

It remains to be seen what will Basha and Berisha decide on. But until then, the DP’s former leader has been quite vocal on social media.

“If 1,000 were to remain, I’ll remain one of you. If 100 were to remain, I’ll remain one of you. If only 1 were to remain, I will remain one of you. Long live the Democratic Party”, says Berisha in a video posted on Facebook on Monday.
