In the “Durrës of mosaics” a very rare mosaic, which is thought to date back to the first centery.
This is the mosaic of the Meander, once the luxurious floor of an ancient dwelling, which for years had been submerged in the sewage of the palace, in the basement of which it was discovered.
With the start of the works for the reinforcement of the multi-storey building damaged by the earthquake in the district no. 11 of Durrës, there was hope for the mosaic with an age of about 1900 years.
“We have been working here for almost 2 months and when we arrived, in the initial state, there was 60 cm of water and dirty from the sewage. 2 weeks in a row, we worked non-stop, with 2 shifts, to bring it to the state that it looks today”, says Leonard Kalia, head of the works.
Despite all the work done, the cultural monument of the First Category is in danger again.
“There are streams every day. Every time it rains, you drown here”, says Kalia.
Therefore, the company’s representatives underline the urgent need to find a concrete solution.
Discovered for the first time in 2005, the Meander mosaic is made in the black and white technique and has the symbol of the moving sun inside.
Due to the very importance of the object, the municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, has requested its relocation to the Archaeological Museum of Durrës.
