Albania must take crucial steps to enhance its energy security, climate sustainability, and economic growth.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) recently conducted a comprehensive assessment of sustainable management alternatives and Albania’s transition. One of the key elements highlighted in the study is the need for diversification of the country’s energy mix. According to a UNECE official’s report on economic matters:

“Ensuring sustainable resource management is vital for Albania’s energy security, climate sustainability, and economic growth. To achieve this, Albania must focus on diversifying its energy sources, improving energy efficiency, harnessing the potential of renewable energy, developing critical resources, and overcoming institutional, regulatory, and financial barriers. By embracing innovative and feasible solutions, Albania can create economic and social benefits for various groups and regions across the country.”

The report emphasizes that Albania possesses significant energy and mineral resources that can contribute to its national revenue and overall development. However, the challenge lies in increasing energy and mineral production while simultaneously reducing harmful emissions.

Albania is presented with several opportunities to develop its energy and mineral resources sustainably:

  1. Exploring the use of algae for producing biofuels and bioplastics to replace fossil fuels and petroleum-based plastics, thereby mitigating emissions and waste;
  2. Tapping into geothermal energy from abandoned oil and gas wells, offering a low-carbon alternative for heating and electricity generation;
  3. Adopting efficient recycling practices for mining waste, transforming it into construction materials, waste reduction, and metal recycling. This approach will not only reduce environmental and health impacts but also add value and extend the life cycle of mineral resources.
