US ambassador: Electoral crimes must be pursued, perpetrators punished and standards maintained for all prosecutors

The US ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim met with three victim coordinators in the city of Pogradec, during which the Prosecutor General, Olsion Çela was also present. During her statement for the press, ambassador Kim stated that investigations or prosecutions for electoral crimes should continue and perpetrators should face the appropriate consequences for their actions.

“The Prosecutor General and I talked about the continuing importance of pursuing electoral crimes, and in all cases where there is crime, victims must be satisfied and the perpetrators must be punished. And finally, we also talked about the extremely important element of maintaining high standards for all prosecutors,” stated the US ambassador.

In addition, she added that: “As the General Prosecutor Olsion Cela mentioned we are here today to meet with 3 of the victims’ coordinators, each from Korca, Elbasan and Pogradec. They play an important role for the Justice Reform in Albania and so we wanted to see how they are doing, and to see if we can offer more support”.

In turn, the Prosecutor General Olsion Cela stated that the meeting revolved around the support that is needed to further strengthen the position of coordinators, keeping a focus on the current situation of crime in our society, against women, minors, and the weakest members of our society.

He added that the aim of this meeting was to raise awareness so that the operators of the justice system, the prosecutors, and judges can offer their support to the victims of violence.
