Vjosa Osmani has been elected as the new president of Kosovo on Sunday, with 71 votes in favor, out of 61 needed.

Osmani was approved by parliament after being proposed by Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s ruling Vetevendosje (Self-Determination) party.

Vjosa Osmani, 38, is a law graduate. She was previously Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo.

Born in Mitrovica, Ms. Osmani completed her master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh, USA.

Her political career started as a LDK activist, while in 2009 she was elected Chief of Staff of the then President of the Republic of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu.

She contributed to Kosovo’s independence in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where at the time she was defending the legality of Kosovo’s independence, a case which Kosovo had won against Serbia.
