While on a visit to meet the citizens of Paçrami in Shkodra, the Ambassador of Sweden to Albania, Elsa Hastad, expressed the concern over the phenomenon of vote-buying and selling ahead of the general elections due on the 25 of April.
She emphasized the importance of saturating attention to this phenomenon, as democracy is in a “fragile state”.
“I value democracy, we are here in Paçram to get the point of view and perception of the people over the electoral process. We don’t talk about vote-buying and selling during meetings but over the participation of the community in the electoral process. The vote-buying and selling phenomenon is concerning, you must be careful because democracy at this current stage is very fragile”, said the ambassador.
“We all have a role, but the state must guarantee its citizens an appropriate electoral process. I don’t want to comment on the involvement of candidates with a criminal past in the elections”, she added.
Political parties have already revved up their engines with polls nearly two weeks away.
Just recently, the Electoral College confirmed the model of the ballot paper to be used in the elections, which will list candidates by numbers and not their names.
