President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, has rejected as “lies” the claims that he is ready to sign the independence of Kosovo.

“I will never sign the independence of Kosovo, while I congratulate all those in the political scene of Serbia who tell such lies,” Vučić said in a video message on his Instagram profile on Thursday.

He insisted that he will “always adhere to the Constitution” of Serbia, in a reaction to the accusations of some opposition parties.

Right-wing parties in Serbia oppose the Ohrid Agreement reached between Serbia and Kosovo at the beginning of this year. They have also repeatedly requested the termination of negotiations for the normalization of relations that Serbia and Kosovo are developing under the mediation of the European Union (EU) since 2011.

The Ohrid Agreement was reached in March in North Macedonia by the Serbian President Vucic and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, with the mediation of the EU. Which is in the annex for the implementation of the European proposal for the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, for which an agreement was reached in advance in February in Brussels.

The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, during her visit to Belgrade on October 31, where she met with President Vučić, declared that the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement is the de facto recognition of Kosovo’s independence.

Von der Leyen explained that the Ohrid Agreement foresees various steps that include, for example, the recognition of Kosovo’s documents and institutions by Serbia.
