The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, announced on Sunday that he had spoken with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and that he thanked him “for assuring me that Russia will provide enough gas to Serbia this winter”.

Serbia was occupied by the Russian occupation of Ukraine completely dependent on Russian gas.

Meanwhile, following the example of many countries of the European Union (EU), Serbia has also started working on finding other sources of gas supply.

However, despite calls from the EU, which the club intends to join, Serbia is not agreeing to impose sanctions on Russia and representatives of the authorities in Belgrade continue to maintain contact with the Kremlin.

Vučić announced on his Instagram profile on Sunday that he had not spoken with Putin for almost two and a half years and that on October 20 they had a “good, open, long and meaningful conversation”.

“I expressed the hope, just like two and a half years ago, that Serbia will not impose sanctions on the Russian Federation,” said Vučić.

He said in a video on Instagram that he also talked with Putin about bilateral, economic and political issues.

Russia is Serbia’s biggest supporter in opposing Kosovo’s independence, which Pristina declared in 2008.

Meanwhile, the conversation between them took place while Russia is awaiting an official response from Serbia on Putin’s invitation in September for Vučić to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan, scheduled to be held from October 22 to 24.
