In 2021, the income of doctors went up by 40%, reaching 80 000 ALL (€ 651.00 euros) as the base wage. Nurses and lab technicians were also affected by this raise, and during the first half of the year, the average income in the public sector was fixed at 68 400 ALL (€554 euros).
In private hospitals, the gap is quite high for specialized doctors that benefit from wages reaching over 1.5 million ALL (€1.222 euros), whereas the difference between the wage of general doctors and nurses compared to those working in the public sector remains negligible.
But does this income justify the level of difficulty of the work, harsh conditions and pressure suffered by doctors in Albania? Friday’s protest at Tirana’s Trauma Hospital, against the recent arrest of several doctors, brought back to the attention the issue of low wages amongst medical professionals.
In recent years, around 1000 medicine graduates and medical personnel has emigrated to Europe and the U.S, mainly because of better wages found abroad and the denigration of their figure and crisis of trust, that they admit to having been faced with, back home.
In our country, the average wage is currently fixed at 56 000 ALL (€456 euros) and according to professionals, this is the same standard received by subordinates, even the personal drivers of cabinet ministers and the difference dividing their earnings with those of doctors is a mere 150-200 euros.
