The seasonal rains have increased the water level in the Fierza Hydropower Plant to 270 meters. In this situation, more energy production is guaranteed and import dependence is reduced.
The weather was not very favorable for electricity production in 2024, until the autumn season. The lack of rainfall reduced the quotas at the Fierza hydropower plant and the energy supply became a combination of import and domestic production.
But in the month of December, the rain and snow had a positive effect on the Drin, raising the level of the lake in Fierza over 270 m above sea level and increasing the water flow to 200 m³ per second.
Meanwhile, it is predicted that from the climate of January, the water level will rise close to the maximum point of 296 m.
To manage the situation, today the Fierza hydropower plant is producing electricity with reduced capacity, with one of the four turbines, in order to preserve the water reserve.
Data from the Energy Regulatory Agency show that in the period January-October 2024, about 6.4 terawatts of energy were produced, or 0.7 terawatts less than the 10-month period of 2023.
