Prime Minister Edi Rama accepted the fact that he has met several times with the former FBI agent, Charles Ms. Gonigal, but underlined that he only had a friendly relationship with him and that it has nothing to do with the case that is being investigated by the Department of Justice in the United States.

In a statement to the media, after his meeting at the SP headquarters with the Socialist district leaders, Rama said that he only met Agron Nezaj, in the presence of McGonigal.

“These are just derivatives of the misreading that is being done to this entire issue. The mention of the name as part of the meeting or in another meeting has nothing to do with the conclusions drawn by the investigation in the USA. The US has run an investigation and certain conclusions have been drawn, conclusions that have nothing to do with what you say. You met an FBI official, I did. You met a senior FBI official several times, yes, I did. I and the government of the Republic of Albania have nothing to do with the conclusion of the investigation for a secondary, while the main issue is different.

The investigations have been completed, there is a person accused of non-declaration and conflict of interest, in relation to his Albanian-American friend from Tropoja, whom I have known in the meeting with him and with whom I have had no relationship other than this friendly relationship and these exchanges without any other interest with the senior FBI official”, he emphasized.

McGonigal is accused of having received $225,000 dollars from a former employee of the secret services of Albania and of having held a series of meetings with businessmen and politicians in Albania, Kosovo, and Bosnia, but without reporting them according to the rules.
