The May 14th elections result has once again reopened the internal debate of leadership plaguing the Democratic Party.

The one to prompt such a debate was Enkelejd Alibeaj with his resignation from the two positions he held within the party; that of chairman in charge and head of the parliamentary group.

The official DP must now find a new leader, who will be elected following the one member-one vote policy, according to the party’s statute.

This statue determines that when the position of the party’s chairman is left vacant, one of the vice-chairmen must be appointed as its chairman in charge.

The only who could lead the party according to the statute is Jorida Tabaku. However, she rejected such an offer last year.

As for the head of the parliamentary group, the dilemma can be solved much easily. There needs to be a meeting of the majority of the members of the parliamentary group to elect the new head and afterwards the Parliament should be notified of the change.

Deputy Ervin Salianji expressed ambitions for this position at the beginning of the year.

Another name said to be considering the post is Gazment Bardhi, the current Secretary General of the Democratic Party.

With all these developments in the official Democratic Party, there is still no sign of unity with the rest of the party, aligned with Sali Berisha.
