October 24 marks the World Day for Awareness and Prevention of Poliomyelitis, a serious disease that primarily affects children.
In Albania, the disease has been eradicated since 1996, thanks to vaccination efforts.
Albania is recognized among the countries with high vaccination coverage against a range of infectious diseases, which, according to doctors, have not been seen for years.
Currently, only two countries — Pakistan and Afghanistan — still report cases of the wild poliovirus.
In 2024, a total of 99 cases were recorded, including 74 in Pakistan and 25 in Afghanistan.
