May 3rd was declared World Press Freedom Day by the United Nations General Assembly, in 1993.
The day serves as a reminder for governments to respect their engagement toward media’s freedom.
It also serves as a day of reflection for journalists and other media actors on their challenges to guarantee press freedom but also to protect ethical and professional journalists.
Equally important, the World Press Freedom Day is a day to show support towards media who are oftentimes censored, or even eliminated, in their attempts to achieve freedom of press.
Lastly, May 3rd serves also as a day of gratitude for journalists who have been threatened, attacked and for those who have lost their lives following and reporting a news story.
