The Northern part of Albania is among the most coveted attractions in the Western Balkans regions. However, some areas still await discovery by local tourists as there are no appropriate maps.

Five youngsters from Shkodra between the age of 15 and 18 are coming to the rescue by developing a website that will promote Albania’s north.

The idea is to provide tourists with more information on the natural resources as well as boosting local businesses.

Edra Dibra, the main person behind this idea, says that the page will serve to promote the whole northern territory.

“We got the idea during a three-day workshop and then we went ahead with its development. Albania’s north has been neglected in comparison to the south”, Edra said.

For Helidon Sokoli, an employee at the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage, the desire of these young people in promoting their home country is something that needs to be highly appreciated given that the majority of their generation are choosing to emigrate.

“We live in the internet era and these initiatives contribute a lot to promoting the area”, said Sokoli.

Even for Aurora, an environmentalist, promoting touristic sites is “crucial”.

“This project aims to create a virtual group and serve as a connecting bridge between businesses in the touristic sector and tourists”, she said.

The project has received the support of UNICEF and the Dutch Embassy in Tirana.
