The PM of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, reacted to today’s verdict of the UN World Court in The Hague, which sentenced the former heads of the Serbian Secret Services during Milosevic’s regime to 12 years in prison.
Kurti stated that the structures led by these individuals committed genocide in Kosovo as well. According to him, Serbia should accept the truth and ask forgiveness, as that is the only way to start over.
“Today, Serbia has to face its past, accept the truth, apologize and distance itself from Milosevic. Only then, can the process of reconciliation start,” – said PM Kurti.
The UN World Court in The Hague sentenced the two close accomplices of Slobodan Milosevic, – Jovica Stanishic, 70, former Chief of Serbian Secret Services and his deputy head, Franko Simatovic, 71.
They were accused of leading paramilitary troops during the wars that took place in former Yugoslavia in the 90s. Initially, The Hague Tribunal released Stanishic and Simatovic from allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity, back in 2013. However, the case was reopened in 2015, following protests and appeals by prosecutors.
These two individuals have been close collaborators of the former Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic, who is known as the ‘Butcher of the Balkans’.
