36 families from the Egyptian community in Kavaja have been facing power cuts since January 4, forcing them to come to Tirana and have their voices heard.
During today’s protest, they asked government authorities to give them a solution because the barracks they are currently housed in, don’t provide the basic technical conditions required by the OSHEE power supplier firm.
“Our children are coming in and out of hospitals, they’re dying from the cold,” – said one of the protestors.
“How can our children go to schools and study without electricity? We are begging you, please, at least grant us a single light bulb,” – said another citizen.
“I don’t receive financial assistance, I’m unemployed, how can our power get cut at the worst time of the year, in winter?” – said another.
Activists called on OSHEE to grant these community members an in-need client status.
Back in January, jurists and civil society representatives submitted a draft proposal at the Council of Minister, asking for more alleviations for families in need.

“We’re asking the have this VKM (legal act) approved along with a dedicated budget for families in need,” – said an activist during today’s protest.
After these statements, a group of representatives from the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Social Protection met with protestors.
The ministry promised that they’ll act as mediators with the municipality of Kavaja and OSHEE in order to get electricity back up for this community.
In the meantime, Euronews Albania contacted the Municipality of Kavaja, which said that they’re currently working on having the situation fixed but weren’t able to provide any further details in terms of when the issue will be resolved for this community.
