Residents of 5 Maji street are continuing their protest before the PM’s Office today, calling on the government to react by Tuesday, or they will be forced to go on a hunger strike. Protestors are asking for transparency when it comes to their expropriation process, with many of them fearing they’ll lose their homeownership rights and find themselves on the street.

The City’s decision to demolish close to 500 homes at 5 Maji street, has forced citizens out of their homes, however, their biggest worry is that they haven’t signed any documents or contracts detailing their compensation or a possible move-in date to their new homes.

This demolition project started in early January, as the City Hall announced that a new neighborhood will be built in this area, claiming that the existing buildings had been heavily damaged by the 2019 earthquake.

In today’s protest, residents warned that if their demands aren’t met and if the government doesn’t come out with an official statement that would guarantee that their rights are respected, they will be forced to go on a hunger strike, which would begin on Tuesday.

The first protest of 5 Maji residents began on January 19, when they were forced out of their homes by the National Inspectorate for Territorial Protection.
