Albania has fulfilled 9 out of 10 recommendations of ‘Greco’, a group of states against corruption, that operates in the European Council. Greco published its yearly report for 2020, noticing an improvement in legal practices.
Recommendations were separated into 3 main columns and until the end of last year, our country had fulfilled 100% of the suggestions in the battle against corruption of parliamentarians, compared to 60% in 2018, when the last monitoring program had taken place.
With these results, our country is ranked on top of the list, amongst Finland and Norway. 100% are accomplished and recommendations against corruption of prosecutors, out of 50% in 2018. The work against the corruption of judges remains low, with 67% of Greco’s recommendations being fulfilled out of 0 in 2018.
This evaluation was made based on the legal changes undertaken this year in order to adjust to these recommendations, but the report doesn’t identify the impact these laws have on the war against corruption.
However, in a periodic report specifically for Albania at the beginning of December 2020, ‘Greco’ had noticed that the level of corruption in Albania remained high, in the public as well as private sector. ‘There needs to be more transparency with the financing of parties and the justice reform and vetting in the state police should continue,’ said the report.
The report also pointed out the politicization and lack of transparency in the donations that would go to police or the structure in general.
Albania has been a part of ‘Greco’ since 2001.
