The disclosure of personal data belonging to the citizens of the district of Tirana has set forth a series of accusations between the government and the Democratic Party.
The Democrats accuse the Socialists of extracting information from the government portal e-Albania and using them for electoral purposes.
Journalists Andi Bushati and Armand Shkullaku, the administrators of the media that leaked the story to the public, have been called in for questioning by the Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Structure, broadly known as SPAK.
Bushati told media afterward that prosecutors inquired him over the source of the information.
“The prosecutors were interested to learn where did the information come from. SPAK wanted us to submit the system of the lists, but we refused”, he added.
After the publication of the data, the head of SPAK Arben Kraja confirmed that the case has been logged and vowed to release concrete details soon.
The National Agency of Information Society (NAIS) responded to an inquiry sent from Euronews Albania and reiterated that the “data has not been utilized for electoral purposes”.
“The harassment of the Democratic Party towards the platform e-Albania, which provides online public services to citizens, is completely baseless. We understand that the DP is in the midst of the electoral campaign but this doesn’t justify its political attack on an institution that is dedicated in its entirety to serve the people. The National Agency of Information Society guarantees Albanian citizens that under any circumstances the data owned by us has not been used, and can neither be technically used by political parties nor the government for political or electoral causes”, responded NAIS.
