Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Minister of Infrastructure Belinda Balluku issued a declaration in connection to the agreement signed for the airport of Vlora.
According to PM Rama, the airport will be “an engine” for the Albanian economy and vowed to build four airports.
Investments at Tirana International Airport add up to €99 million, Rama said.
Infrastructure Minister Balluku said that construction work for the airport of Vlora will start within 14 months, while in the meantime an environmental study is set to take place.
“The airport of Vlora will not only inject right away €100 million investment in the economy, but the indirect effects of this airport are also extraordinary, be that in terms of employment levels at the airport and the surrounding area, but also regarding finances that will grow due to operations at this airport”, said Balluku.
Plans to build the airport in Vlora have been widely condemned by local and international environmental organizations amid fears that it will destroy the ecosystem.
This area has registered a total number of 200 species of wild birds, according to environmentalists as well as it is one of the most important nesting homes in Albania and Europe.
