During a press conference, Euronews Albania’s journalist asked Albanian President Ilir Meta about a recent comment made on US Ambassador Yuri Kim claiming that she is siding with the prime minister.

The head of state said he’s “unimpressed” by lobbyists “in English and thinking in Serbian” for Albania.

“As you know the Serbian president intervened in our domestic affairs with the slogan that Basha is a puppet of Berisha. It is a scenario to overturn the will of the Albanian people for their future in Europe. I have an unwavering respect for the United States as it has been a source of inspiration for liberty and democracy and they’ve engaged to bring Albania to the EU as soon as possible. This has been my commitment since when I want was a student and this will happen at any cost”.

“The President is not impressed by lobbyists speaking in English and thinking in Serbian about Albania. Albania belongs to the Albanian people”, said the head of state.

On Friday evening, US Ambassador Yuri Kim appealed to refrain from acts of violence at the elections, amid earlier calls from President Meta to citizens of Fier “to sharpen axes and forks” and “stand up to protect the vote”.

The President said during an interview on local media that the Ambassador has “intervened enough in Albania’s domestic affairs” and that she should not “shield Edi Rama”.
