The German Ambassador to Albania, Peter Zingraf, visited the village of Maliq near Korca, where he said that international investments in Albania will continue while describing them as “essential” for the country’s progress as well as European future.
Speaking under the framework of Europe Weeks 2021 in Albania, the German diplomat pointed to the example of a regional project in the area of Maliq for integrated solid waste management and listed among others its success in the protection of the environment and tourism in the area.
Ambassador Zingraf thanked all the actors involved in bringing the project to life, as well as government structures for their collaboration.
Responding to journalists’ inquiries over Albania’s membership negotiations, the German diplomat said that he hopes talks will begin as soon as possible.
“According to the judgment of the experts, in regards to adjusting the standards of a country with those of the European Union, two-third of the work will have to be implemented on a local level, and only a third on a central level”, the ambassador said as he encouraged regional investments.
“The federal government has repeatedly said that conditions to start accession negotiations have now been fulfilled, and the Commission asserted the same. Personally, I am optimistic about opening negotiations, but there must be an understanding that this is a process that requires the agreement of all EU member states. The German Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs is optimistic that negotiations will begin soon for both Albania and North Macedonia”, concluded Ambassador Zingraf.
