Analyst Andi Bushati stated during Euronews Albania’s ‘Shock’ that despite the fact that four candidates are racing for the new Chair during the leadership elections of the Democratic Party, in fact, the race isn’t real. According to him, this comes as a result of the three other candidates entering the race under unequal conditions, against Lulzim Basha, who according to him, should’ve left, after the defeat in the general elections.
“If you ask me, it isn’t real and it is a race that despite having many candidates, in fact, all the others are entering under unequal conditions. We all know that our parties have turned into the leader’s party, where it is impossible to overthrow the leader that has a hold of all the structures. I am in favor of those that support Basha’s resignation after the April 25th’s defeat,” argued Bushati.
Whereas according to analyst Baton Haxhiu, the elections for the leadership of DP are offering a real race, bringing up the example of the two candidates racing against Basha, who were known to be people that were very close to him.
“The race isn’t fake, two of the candidates have shared their political journey with Basha and their language is quite harsh, Shehaj and his Deputy minister. And Kadilli is an important exponent as well,” said Haxhiu.
Andi Bushati continued his analysis by arguing that “the fact that the candidates aren’t fake, doesn’t necessarily prove that the race is real”. He brought up the example for SP’s leadership, when Rama was racing against Maqo Lakrori.
According to him, “it is impossible, in a party, where there is no internal debate and no friction; where everyone is a soldier of the leader”, to have a race, claiming that “everyone knows, that Basha will win”.
He related this situation with the state of democracy within parties in Albania and drew a parallel amongst the power of Rama today, in SP and his position before 9 years, when Fatos Nano led the party, to which Bushati added that “Nano wouldn’t even let him enter the room”.
