National Territorial Defense Inspectorate begins demolition of damaged buildings

On Sunday, the National Territorial Defense Inspectorate (IKMT) began the demolition of the damaged buildings from the November 26th earthquake.

The operation is backed by road police units, which has helped normalize the traffic, has begun at the beach area where a 5-storey building, almost completely ruined by the powerful earthquake strike, was taken down.

Road police units are on the scene to help with traffic congestion, while authorities began the demolition of a 5-storey building in the beach area, which was almost completely wiped out by the powerful earthquake. 

The 5-storey building, fell nearby the area where the bulldozers were working, risking the life of the people that were present at the moment.

“The Housing Evaluation Expert Group, composed of 70 local and foreign expert engineers, and supported by the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism and the United Nations, is making an assessment of all the damaged buildings, according to a methodology developed in cooperation with the EU’s Civil Emergency. The experts are being assisted by the Albanian State Police and respective municipalities. The evaluation groups, have started to work on the field since November 29th.”

“Eleven groups from Durres City Hall, have assessed over 250 premises, including Public School buildings” said the Minister for Addressing the Consequences of the Earthquake. The buildings verified from the experts, which have suffered great damage and are at a great risk for the residents, will undergo demolition in order to avoid any future threats.

According to the experts, the damaged buildings pose a great risk to residents, therefore they will be demolished in order to avoid any further damage.
