On Monday, Justice Minister Etilda Gjonaj reported the annual state of criminality for 2020 in front of the Committee on Legal Affairs.
Speaking about the progress made in tackling corruption and money laundering, minister Gjonaj called on SPAK to investigate prosecutors and judged discharged as a result of the vetting process.
According to the chair of the committee, Ulsi Manja, more should be done to combat money laundering, adding that since 2018 no one has been charged for offenses falling under that category.
Among other things, Gjonaj weighed in on the importance to harshen punishments for sex offenders and domestic violence, a proposal endorsed by all the members of the committee.
Minister Gjonaj also spoke about the head of the Elbasan District Court, Enkeleda Kapedani, who is under investigation for misconduct after posting inappropriate video selfies inside the premises of the court.
Gjonaj said the leaked videos are “unworthy of a comment” and asserted that in 2019 it had called on the High Judicial Council to “verify” and “take measures” against the judged as she was allegedly involved in the release of a prominent member of a criminal gang in Vlora.
