Journalist Mentor Kikia said on Euronews Albania that the suspension of all legal proceedings regarding the case questioning the legitimacy of the local elections, by the Constitutional Court, shows its reluctance to make a final decision.
“I see the case of the local elections as a very clean case, from the legal aspect, so a decision in favor or against it shouldn’t be that hard to make. I don’t really see this as a need to consult a council of judicial experts like the Venice Commission, more so than an inability or incapability of the Constitutional Court. I see a reluctance to make a final judgment,” argued the journalist.
“I see a sense of fear to come to such an important decision,” he said adding that the Constitutional Court is asking for the opinion of the Venice Commission in order to be provided with a protective shield, before announcing their final verdict.
After a marathon session, the Constitutional Court decided to suspend the case of the lawsuit filed by Voltana Ademi, director of the Municipality Association claiming the illegitimacy of the June 30th local elections.
At this point, the Constitutional Court is expected to turn to the Venice Commission for an opinion regarding the constitutionality of the local elections, which took place in Albania on June 30th, during which the opposition didn’t participate and all municipalities were only represented by one candidate.
