The Turkish company Baykar Technologies will supply the Albanian State Police with a batch of super-intelligent drones that will be put to use to combat crime.

“Bayraktar DIHA”, a drone specialized in reconnaissance and intelligence missions is believed to be the model that the Albanian police will acquire, Euronews Albania has learned.

The drone can move at a speed of 80 km/h and can be commanded at a distance of up to 150 km/, can stay in the air for several hours, and bring back high-resolution images in real-time.

However, it is now known when will the drones be available to the state police. This is not the first time that the State Police makes an effort to incorporate advanced and expensive technology in its operations.

A few years, a professional drone purchased from the company “Airbus” was bought for 350,000 through a secret tender.

But, in the last two years, only basic drones have been put to use mainly to control remote areas on suspicion of marijuana plantations, although several times there were incidents reported where the drones were shot down by the traffickers.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, Artan Rexhepi, a criminology expert said the move should be seen positively.

According to Rexhepi, putting technology at use will contribute to lowering criminal offenses and perpetrators will have a harder time bailing out from the crime scene.

“If put to use properly, for me, it will have a very positive result. It will make it increasingly difficult for perpetrators. In theory, I like the idea, but then the will to implement it is an entirely different matter”, he said.
