Six years ago on this day, Kosovo’s lawmakers voted in favor of a constitutional amendment that paved the way to the establishment of the Special Court.

Back then, it was the opposition that raised its voice against the Special Court, calling it “unfair”, “selective”, and that it “undermined the country’s sovereignty”.

The government admitted to some extent that voting had been “unjust”, although describing the court as something “necessary in order to remove all doubts on the crimes committed by Kosovo’s Liberation Army”.

Kosovo Special Chambers has already indicted several former top war officials, including ex-president Hashim Thaçi, two former speakers of the Assembly Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, as well as the former spokesperson of the army, Rexhep Selimi.

The Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office are a part of Kosovo’s justice system but are based at the Hague and its staff are all citizens of either an EU member state or one of the five non-EU contributing countries: Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United States.
