Population growth picks up again after recent drastic drop, INSTAT

Albania has seen considerable population growth in the second semester of the year, after a steep decline recorded in the past 6 months.

Data published by INSTAT, the country’s statistical institute, indicate a positive birth-death ratio from April to June.

The population shrank in the first three months of 2021, as the birth and death rate was over 3500 persons less.

In the second semester of 2021, there were 5,993 births and 5,777 deaths. If these figures are compared to the same period last year, there is a 10.6% drop in births and a 7.3% increase in mortalities.

In 5 counties there was natural population growth, while population shrank in 7 others.

The highest value of natural increase was recorded in Tirana, where the number of births exceeds by 590 the number of deaths, while the lowest is recorded in the region of Korça, where deaths exceed by 205 the number of births.

In the second semester of 2021, the highest birth rate was recorded in Tirana (1,999 births) and the lowest in Gjirokastra (92).

Albania’s population shrank by 16,000 in 2020, marking a 0.6% drop compared to 2019, according to INSTAT.

Albania’s population by 2031 is expected to be 2,745,996.
