Prime Minister Edi Rama has appointed the former education minister Lindita Nikolla as the new Speaker of Parliament.
Rama had previously warned that the post would go to a woman.
“At the top of the Albanian Assembly, as a woman with a long history of contributions and experience in our political family. As an undoubted example of commitment and nobility in carrying every duty, as a good friend to all and career political characterized by her will in having a well-mannered dialogue with others, she will also be an ex-officio member of the Socialist Party leadership”, said Rama.
Asked from Euronews Albania, Nikolla said that the new post came to her a surprise, emphasizing that she had no information whatsoever of taking the lead of the Albanian Parliament.
“It is translated as a great responsibility to live up to this trust bestowed on me. Let’s await until all procedures are finished to speak more broadly about the new duty”, she said.
The former speaker of the assembly, Gramoz Ruçi, announced that he is stepping down from politics at the age of 69 after a 3-decade long career during an extraordinary congress of the Socialist Party back in June.
Euronews Albania also spoke to the former speaker of the Assembly, and senior member of the Socialist Party, over his opinion for the newly appointed ministers.
“Let’s wait and see”, he responded.
Meanwhile, he added that he will only retain his role as a “socialist, family guy, and perfect grandpa”.
