The leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, set up a meeting with the heads of the party branches on Saturday.

Euronews Albania journalist Ardit Hoxha said that the meeting lasted around an hour and a half, where Basha argued the reasons behind his decision to expel former party leader Sali Berisha in front of the College of the Leaders.

Now, the leaders of the party’s local branches must convey the message to simple party members.

On Friday, as the first plenary session convened, wide discontent between party members was clearly visible, with some supporting Basha’s decision, while others greeting Berisha with a standing ovation as he was entering the premises.

The United States welcomed the decision of the leader of the Democratic Party. In a Facebook post, the US Embassy wrote the move “deserves respect” and it shows that the DP has the will to “break up from the past” in order to build its future.

Sali Berisha maintained a harsh stance against DP’s leader, accusing him of collaborating with PM Edi Rama.

“Edi Rama, you can buy off or sell Lulzim Basha, but never the DP or Albanian democrats. You’re completely hopeless with those backstabbing plans you made with Lulzim Basha”, stressed Berisha.

Berisha expressed with almost certainty that there is an obscure deal between Rama and Basha.

“I will leave the date of that pact to historians, but I guarantee that what happened is an agreement between Rama and Basha, on the back of Albanian voters, which needs to be dismantled”, said the former premier.

The leader of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha announced Thursday evening that he is expelling Sali Berisha from DP’s parliamentary group until accusations made against Berisha by the State Department are cleared out.
