The issue of Kosovo won’t disappear and it needs to be resolved before any steps can be taken towards opening another process like the integration into EU. This was the message that the German chancellor, Angela Merkel shared with the Serbian public during her visit to Belgrade, on Monday.
Responding to a question posed by journalists during a press conference, Merkel said that she was conscious that such issues require time and effort before being settled.
“The issue of Kosovo needs to be rectified so that your access to EU integration can be resolved,” – said Merkel during a press conference beside Serbian president, Aleksandar Vucic.
Merkel also added that she hopes that interested parties will be able to achieve progress in the upcoming rounds of the dialogue.
On his part, Vucic declared that he is aware that a condition to join the EU for Serbia, is rectifying their relationship with Prishtina.
“If the question is whether or not we know that we won’t be able to enter the EU without having previously resolved our issues with Kosovo, then yes, I can say that’s completely clear to us,” – said Vucic.
Vucic also noted that Serbia is willing to discuss any solution that has been negotiated with Prishtina, but first, according to him, the sides should agree that there can be free movement of goods, services, currency and people amongst our countries.
In addition, while making an overall remark about the Balkans, Merkel stated that the region has a long way ahead of them before they can finally reach their integration into the Union, but she emphasized that it is definitely Germany’s objective and Europe’s strategic interest that this goal can one day be achieved.
