Petar Petkovic, director of the so-called Serbian Office for Kosovo has reacted to yesterday’s decision made by the Government of Kosovo to change the rules on cars entering the country carrying Serbian registration plates.
The ‘license plate reciprocity’ has raised bilateral tensions and has many fuming over the issue calling it a ‘threat and unfair treatment towards Serbian minorities in Kosovo’.
On his part, Petkovic declared that the Serbian nation won’t keep silent in the face of this decision.
“This is damaging the livelihood in northern Kosovo because these are cars, that amongst others, transport our patients, children and basic food provisions,” – declared the head of the so-called Serbian Office for Kosovo.
On the other hand, Kurti stated that reciprocity was ‘imposed’ upon Kosovo by Serbia, seeing that they refuse to recognize Kosovo’s independence and as a result, they don’t recognize its license plates either.
Faced with the current situation, the EU has asked for self-restraint and a reduction of tensions, while sending their Special Envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, to the region in order to mediate the conflict and try to find a possible solution.
On Monday, the government of Kosovo announced that all vehicles carrying Serbian registration plates should get a hold of a temporary set of plates, upon entry to Kosovo – plates will be available at all border crossing points at a cost of 5 euros, valid for 60 days.
