The money spent by political parties during an electoral campaign is a strong indicator that says a lot about the principles held by these parties’ politicians as well as the strategies they would use if they were to come to power.
According to the financial reports provided by the major political parties in Albania – SP and DP – it seems like everything plays out perfectly and the amount of funding each party was able to generate during the year, was enough to pay for their electoral campaigns.
However, this is only at face value. If we take a closer look, these parties have a clear lack of transparency when it comes to providing their detailed financial statements that would show exactly where their money comes from and where it goes.
According to the declarations given by SP, during 2021, this party was able to generate funds that amounted to ALL 176 538 087 (ALL 120 711 337 in funds generated by the party and ALL 55 826 750 in public funds).
Meanwhile, according to DP’s declarations for 2021, this party was able to generate a total of ALL 47 625 660 (ALL 33 318 149 in public funds and 14 307 511 in self-generated funds).
In addition, SP’s 2021 electoral campaign cost the party a total of ALL 172 046 612 whereas DP’s campaign cost them ALL 47 625 660.
The lack of detailed reports and transparency in our political parties’ financial statements continue to be the main reason for the high levels of corruption in our country, which allow these parties and their leaders to continue not being held accountable about where these funds are coming from and where they’re being spent.
