Police shooter found in serious condition after turning gun on himself

Police have found Aldi Rama in a serious condition from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, after a five-hour manhunt.

The 21-year-old shot Saimir Hoxha, a police officer who approached his vehicle because there were suspicions that he was in possession of narcotics. Rama fled the scene and his vehicle was found around 1 kilometer away.

Special units from the Department of Neutralization of Armed Elements (RENEA) and the Rapid Intervention Forces (FNSH) were dispatched in a citywide operation in the areas of Kune Vain and Lezha, as there were indications that the shooter was hiding in the area.

Three years ago, Rama was convicted of a robbery and possession of drugs. It was his girlfriend that turned him to the police, claiming that he had stolen her cellphone and forced her to do drugs.

He was sentenced to 3 years and four months in jail. His attorneys pleaded to the judge to reduce his sentence, arguing he was being raised by his grandfather after his parents had been divorced. His jail sentence was converted to release on probation.
