Two citizens were arrested today – Arlind Muxhiu and Fatjon Haxhiu – due to allegedly being involved in bribing several officials with the goal of obtaining a higher compensation for damages caused by the earthquake.
They have both given 2000 euros to Dhimitri Papa and Kristaq Kali, who are both experts at the Construction Institute, administrative division of Petrela, falling under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Tirana.
These two citizens wanted to up their reimbursement checks for damages caused on both of their buildings after the earthquake, and they were asking the officials to help them change the value set by the preliminary expert teams.
Papa was taken behind bars whereas Kali is currently under house arrest over document falsification.
Meanwhile, Sokol Kupi, head of the administrative division of Petrela, has been suspended from his office duties and is currently under obligation to appear in court.
In addition, SPAK has opened an official investigation regarding a series of cases where the 2019 earthquake compensations are reported to have been misused.
