Today marked the beginning of the 5-day electoral campaign for the runoffs set to take place in Kosovo, where citizens will vote for the new mayors of the 21 remaining communes.
One of the most prominent face-offs will be in Prishtina, where the race for the second round of elections will be amongst Arben Viti of LVV (Self-Determination Movement), who won 45.54% of votes in the first round and Perparim Rama of LDK (Democratic Alliance of Kosovo), who won 29.17% of votes.
Second in line in terms of tough races will be Prizren, where Mytaher Haskuka of LVV (40.41%) will go head-to-head with Shaqir Totaj of PDK (Democratic Party of Kosovo), who won 31.36% of votes during the first round of the 2021 local elections in Kosovo.
Gjakova will also head to runoffs, where Ardian Gjini of the AAK (Alliance for the Future of Kosovo) with 45.76% will face Mimoza Kusari-Lila of LVV with 37.20% of votes.
Another tight race is expected to play out in the communes of Gjilan, Podujeva, Drenas and Kacanik.
In the majority of the 21 communes heading to runoffs in Kosovo, the candidates running for mayor are either from Albin Kurti’s LVV or Lumir Abdixhiku’s LDK.
On October 17, the turnout for the 2021 local elections in Kosovo was 42.50%.
17 political parties were able to declare victory after the first round of voting, whereas the remaining 21 will be heading to the second round next week.
The ruling party, LVV (Self-Determination Movement) wasn’t able to win in any of the communes, but it remains to be seen whether or not it will win any of the municipalities in the 12 communes it is running in during the upcoming runoffs.
